Recently, $$^{177}$$Lu is considered as one of the most important medical RIs for treating neuroendocrine tumors. A plan to produce $$^{177}$$Lu with high purity by using enriched $$^{176}$$Yb samples with irradiation of deuteron beams in accelerators has been discussed. However, since the other Yb isotopes contained in the Yb sample interacts with deuterons, Lu isotopes other than $$^{177}$$Lu are produced as impurities. Since the purity of $$^{177}$$Lu is important for medical use, a method to evaluate the impurity of Lu has been required. In this study, we proposed a new method to estimate production yields of each Lu isotopes in Yb samples with arbitrary isotopic compositions by using excitation functions of Yb($$d,x$$)Lu reactions and the particle transport calculation code PHITS. The method plays an important role in discussing the isotopic composition of enriched samples to produce high-purity $$^{177}$$Lu using accelerators.

JAERI-Research 2004-021, 43 Pages, 2004/12

JAERI-Research-2004-021.pdf:8.55MB

We have designed and developed a $$gamma$$ measurement system to certify radioactive wastes below the clearance level. By advancing non-destructive $$gamma$$-ray assay technology, it aims at quantitative determination of radionuclides contained in 200 litter drum/container wastes. Unlike the waste from a nuclear power plant, you have to assume that the waste originating from radioisotope usage and nuclear research laboratory have a variety of contents and a complex mixture of radionuclides, and furthermore the uniformity of activity concentration is unknown. To cope with the problems, we have developed the $$gamma$$-ray measuring instruments (units) with effective improvement of capability against each problem. They are (1) germanium $$gamma$$ spectrometry unit for enhanced peak identification, (2) positioning detection unit for positioning of $$gamma$$ interactions and (3)high-efficiency detection unit for separation of low-energy component. This report summarizes the direction of the clearance level measuring system and the three developed measuring units with their performances.

This report summarizes the educational activities and related management of the Nuclear Technology andEducation Center (NuTEC) during the 2001 fiscal year. Both Tokyo and Tokai Education Centers have successfully conducted almost all the planned domestic and international training courses. In addition Tokai Education Center has performed the 3nd nuclear supervisor training course and introduced a new course for special nuclear emergency preparedness in response to the legal amendment after the criticality accident. The sum total number of participants was 1,310. The International Technology Transfer Division has not only planned and organized the international training courses, but also taken charge of the 3nd workshop on Human Resource Development in Nuclear Field in Asian and Pasific Region. Various researches have been made to improve the educational program.

An anti-Compton spectrometer with semi-2$$pi$$ Compton suppression is designed to identify the photons emitted from low-level radioactive wastes from radioisotope usage and nuclear research laboratory. Since the objective sample is massive and large, the system has a full opening towards the sample position. The characteristics and features of the system concerning Compton suppression and reduction of the background component due to natural radioactive source are estimated by the Monte Carlo simulations. The anti-Compton technique is shown to be quite advantageous for the reduction of the surrounding natural background radiation, as well as the suppression of the background for the higher energy photons.

Journal of Nuclear Science and Technology, 39(Suppl.2), p.1334 - 1337, 2002/08

Experimental cross sections for the reactions $$^{186}$$W(d,2n)$$^{186}$$Re, $$^{nat.}$$W(d,xn)$$^{181-184}$$Re and $$^{186}$$W(d,p)$$^{187}$$W are measured up to 34 MeV using the stacked foil method. The values obtained are compared with cross sections calculated using the ALICE code. The experimental and theoretical excitation functions are in reasonable agreement except for the $$^{186}$$W(d,p)$$^{187}$$W reaction.
